　　笛を吹いて谷を下ろう
　　陽気な歌を奏でよう
　　雲の上の小さな子どもが
　　僕のほうに微笑みかける

　　“子羊の歌を吹いてみてよ”
　　陽気な歌はいかがかな
　　“ねえもう一度吹いてみてよ”
　　涙がでるほど素敵かい

　　“ねえその笛はもういいから
　　君の声で歌ってみてよ“
　　こんな具合でいかがかな
　　涙が出るほど素敵かい

　　“その歌を本に書いてみてよ
　　ほかのみんなも読めるように“
　　小さな子どもがいなくなると
　　僕は葦の茎を引き抜き

　　それで一本の葦ペンを作り
　　きれいな水をインク代わりに
　　楽しい歌を書き込んだ
　　ほかのみんなも聞けるように
　　

ウィリアム・ブレイク詩集「無垢の歌」の最初の歌は、笛吹きと少年の出会いの歌である。天使の形をとった少年が笛吹きの前に現れ、これから展開する無垢の歌の数々を、自分の声で歌うよう、笛吹きに促す。笛吹きは望まれるまま歌を歌い、それを葦のペンで書き留めるのだ。

　　'Pipe a song about a Lamb!'
　　So I piped with merry cheer.
