朝に寄す To Morning

ウィリアム・ブレイク詩集「ポエティカル・スケッチ」から「朝に寄す」 To Morning（壺齋散人訳）

　　おお聖なる処女よ！　純白の衣を着て
　　天空の黄金の門を開き　出てきておくれ
　　天空で眠っている夜明けを起こし
　　東の空から光を注がせておくれ
　　そして目覚める日に蜜のような露を贈っておくれ
　　おお輝く朝よ　狩人のように起き上がった
　　太陽にご挨拶なさい
　　そしてバスキンを履いて私たちの丘に現れなさい

この詩は朝を擬人化して歌ったものだ。押韻が不規則で、荒削りなところが目立つが、ブレイクのみずみずしい感性が現れている。

To Morning

　　O holy virgin! clad in purest white,
　　Unlock heav'n's golden gates, and issue forth;
　　Awake the dawn that sleeps in heaven; let light
　　Rise from the chambers of the east, and bring
　　The honey'd dew that cometh on waking day.
　　O radiant morning, salute the sun
　　Rous'd like a huntsman to the chase, and with
　　Thy buskin'd feet appear upon our hills.
